France has edged closer to ending its monopoly on online gambling, opening the industry up to private competition. The current bill, which aims to open up its online gambling market, has just been passed by the Senate with a vote of 181 to 140. It now heads back to the House of Commons for a second reading which is dated for March 30th. If passed again in the House of Commons, the bill will need final approval from the EU, the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Council before being made law.

With the World Cup starting June 11, the industry is hedging its bets that the bill will be made into law pre tournament, allowing the French to bet on online Sportsbooks during South Africa 2010.

Although the bill still has a little way to go before it becomes law, preparations must begin now if you are an operator at home or aboard looking to enter into and operate in France.
